In India, a 19-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl weighing 15lbs and doctors claim she’s the “heaviest baby girl ever born in the world”.

Nandini, 19, gave birth to her first child by ᴄᴀᴇsᴀʀᴇᴀɴ sᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ on Monday 23 May 2016 at the hospital in Hassan, in the southern state of Karnataka (India).

It is believed the newborn girl in India will overtake Carisa Ruscak, pictured here with Caroline and Bryan, who was the heaviest newborn girl in the world when she was born, weighing 14lb 5oz in Massachusetts in 2014.

The average baby is born weighing less than half the weight of Nandini’s daughter. Dr Venkatesh Raju, the local health officer, said: “In my 25 years of experience, I had never seen such a big baby. She is a miracle. I believe she is not only the heaviest baby born in India, but the heaviest baby girl ever born in the world.”

Nandini, who weighed 94 kg and stood 5’9 tall, had a smooth pregnancy and was unaware she was going to give birth to a big baby. The baby had been kept at the neonatal intensive care unit and doctors were monitoring her development. Dr Poornima Manu, the gynaecologist who delivered the baby, said: “She came as a big surprise for all of us. She is a beautiful gift from God, I am glad she is well.”

Normally, cases of large babies are due to ɢᴇsᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ ᴅɪᴀʙᴇᴛᴇs in the mother. However, in this case, doctors have ruled out this option. “The mother attended all her controls and never showed signs of ɢᴇsᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ ᴅɪᴀʙᴇᴛᴇs or ᴛʜʏʀᴏɪᴅ ᴅɪsᴏʀᴅᴇʀs,” says Poormina Manu, the gynecologist who attended the delivery.

Both the baby and the mother are recovering perfectly after giving birth. It should be remembered that the regular weight of a newborn is 3 to 3.5 kilos.

Nandini and her husband Arun were married in 2014 and were excited about welcoming their first child. Now that she is here, they said they are “overjoyed” to be parents.
